History of Monument

Seven years after the Rio Grande Railroad brought settlers in 1872, the town was established as Henry’s Station after a prominent settler, Henry Limbach. The name was soon changed to Monument after Monument Creek, a mountain stream that tumbles into Palmer Lake, and Monument Rock. Businesses sprouted up one by one. Ranching helped sustain the economy.
